Engineering Expertise

Stern & Stern’s staff offers technical expertise in yarn preparation, weaving, finishing, and material testing.  They represent a combined tenure of nearly 100 years working with customers on the design and manufacture of thousands of patterns.

The kind of specialized work they do is exemplified by a parachute requirement for the quantitative analysis of the thin atmosphere of the planet Mars:

Goal:
To lower sensory equipment very slowly through the martian atmosphere to sample its content, temperature gradients, and wind gradients.

Requirement:
A parachute system employing a flexible fabric, stable in permeability in a temperature environment from 25°C down to -50°C, offering. a huge canopy of relatively open weave fabric; whose total fabric weight could not exceed that of the small sensory equipment so as to avoid a “capsizing” of the entire system.

Execution:
Our staff identified a high tenacity polyester fiber, weave construction, and finishing methodology that resulted in an optimal fabric design and a successful martian mission.

Occasionally, yarns that have been available for years become discontinued;. Our staff is very experienced in anticipating such problems, and ensuring that replacement yarns, weaving layouts, and finishing techniques are established in anticipation of orders from our customers.
